EUDiagnostic Imaging Market Analysis

An executive snapshot landscape tracking long-term modality adoption and future demand trajectories across key European markets.

Project overview

This analysis explores the European diagnostic imaging market using the Eurostat dataset for CT, MRI, and PET examinations. The objective is to identify regional differences in clinical pathways and support strategic planning for contrast agent portfolios.

The pipeline processes over 8,000 records to track structural demand, focusing on key markets such as Italy, Germany, France, and Spain.

Analytics architecture

The data processing pipeline is built in Python, utilizing Pandas and SciPy to clean raw data, map complex categorical variables, and perform Z-score anomaly detection to filter administrative reporting noise from genuine systemic shocks.

The final deliverable is an interactive Power BI report incorporating relational data modeling, DAX measures, and native Exponential Smoothing algorithms to forecast demand for 2024–2027.

Key strategic insights

  • The Italian penetration gap: Italy reveals a structural diagnostic deficit, tracking 27.54% below the EU average for MRI exams per 100k inhabitants.
  • COVID-19 resilience: extreme market fluctuations in 2020 were followed by an aggressive double-digit V-shaped rebound in 2021, confirming robust structural need.
  • Technological mix: a polarized MRI/CT ratio dictates tailored product strategies. Germany and Italy demand premium gadolinium-based portfolios, while Belgium and Poland remain CT-dominant volume drivers for iodine-based agents.
  • Nuclear medicine expansion: PET examinations demonstrate explosive double-digit compound annual growth rates, peaking at 11.83% in France.
